Omkareshwar: The 'Mini Varanasi' in Madhya Pradesh

The sacred temple of Omkareshwar is located on the 'Om' shaped island, near the Narmada River in Madhya Pradesh. Its also called as 'Mini Varanasi' due to the presence of ghats. Over the years, it has evolved as a popular destination for backpackers also, along with the pilgrims. It preserves one of the 12 Jyotirlingas of Lord Shiva and is known for its spiritual vibe. The island is also called as Mandhata and is thronged by Vindhya Ranges in the north and Satpura Hills in the south.

It is believed that the Jyotirlinga at Omkareshwar is divided into distinct parts. The first part is known as Omkareshwar, which signifies the 'Lord of Omkara.' While, the other part is known as 'Amareshwar' which signifies ' Lord of Immortal Gods.' Legend has it that Lord Shiva appeared in front of the demons here in Omkareshwar, to defend the Gods.

Following are the main attractions of Omkareshwar:

Gauri Somnath Temple: It is revered for being one of the biggest shrines present in Omkareshwar. Its Bhumij style of architecture is very exquisite, as the temple is constructed in the form of a pea hen with three distinct storeys. It is dedicated to worshipping Lord Shiva. The Shiva Lingam present here is 6 feet in height.

Omkareshwar Temple:  It is revered for being one of the most important pilgrimage spots in India. It is also known for its close association with the Mammaleshwar temple. In the ancient history of India, there were several religious sacrifies that were performed here. The Nagara style of architecture makes the temple look very distinct. Omkareshwar

Kajal Rani Cave: It is located around 9 km away from the Omkareshwar Temple. It is known for the long stretches of view of the undulating landscapes and the epiphanic sunsets. So, its known for the paradise for backpacker's paradise.

Kedareshwar Temple:  Apart from its dynamic structure, the temple is known for being located at the confluence of River Kaveri and River Narmada. The temple was built in the 11th century.

Mamaleshwar Temple: It is revered for housing one of the 12 Jyotirlingas of Lord Shiva. It is believed that though Omkareshwar Temple is also famous for the Jyotirlinga, the actual one is housed at the Mamaleshwar Temple. The hall and sanctum of this temple has sacred vibes. 

Excursions from Omkareshwar: Intrepid travellers can explore near by cities such as Maheshwar ( 69 km), Khandwa ( 70 km), Mandu ( 109 km) and Ujjain ( 140 km).

Shopping in Omkareshwar: Small Shiva lingas made with marble stone are the main attractions for tourists in Omkareshwar. The local sweets here are very delicious.

Air: The nearest airport to Omkareshwar is located at Indore, at a distance of 70 km.
Rail: Trains are available from Indore railway station to Omkareshwar. The distance  is 77 km.
Road: Major towns and cities of Madhya Pradesh are well connected by bus or taxi services with Omkareshwar.
