Lucknow Travel Guide

Overview
LucknowLucknow: The City of Nawabs
Few cities are unique. You can feel the past, present and future nestled within them. An encounter with such a destination, reminds us of Rasmenia Massoud’s quote “a city isn’t so unlike a person. They both have the marks to show they have many stories to tell. They see many faces. They tear things down and make new again.” India is teeming with such tantalising destinations but we bet Lucknow’s magic is unparallel. After all, it is the city of Minarets and domes.
Lucknow, the capital city of Uttar Pradesh, is situated on the northern Gangetic plains of India. It is a heaven for the history buffs, paradise for the wildlife fanatics and a favourite haunt for the shopaholics. The city has earned sobriquets like 'The City of Nawabs', 'Golden City of the East', 'Shiraz-i-Hind', and 'The Constantinople of India' due to its rich and glorious past.
Lucknow Tourism lets you indulge into heritage sightseeing as the destination serves as an excellent spot for purchasing the intricate chikan embroidery, sumptuous Tundae ke kebab and scented oil. You can also savour rare Kashmiri Tea at Akbari Gate in Old Lucknow.
If you are a big fan of mangoes, you should know that the best qualities of Dasheri mangoes are exported from here to many countries. So, carry a big basket with you when ever you are travelling during the mango season.
And in case you are lucky enough, you might get a picture with Birju Maharaj, the leader of Lucknow gharana of Kathak dance. Simply do not miss the enthralling view from the top of Bhool Bhulaiya at Bara Imambara. You get to have the bird’s eye view of all the monuments, from Rumi Darwaza, Clock towers, Asafi Masjid, River Gomti and even the chaotic streets of Lucknow.

Following are the main travel attractions of Lucknow

Rumi Darwaza
Also known as Turkish Gate, this is the most imposing tourist attraction in Lucknow. A fine example of Awadhi architecture, the gate also serves as an entrance to the city. This gateway that stands 60-feet-tall was modelled on the gateways of the then Constantinople or Modern Istanbul. It is actually a fine emulation of an ancient entrance at Constantinople.

Bara Imambara
Built in 1784, it is a majestic shrine built by Shia Muslims for the purpose of mourning for Muharram.  It is an engineering marvel. It is world’s largest unsupported structure. It was constructed by the 4th Nawab and took 14 years to complete. Small size Lakhanui bricks along with lime plaster have been used in its construction, rather than wood or metal.
One very striking fact about this edifice is the maze of hundreds of narrow stairway passages called as Bhool Bhulaiya in Bara Imambara. Some of these stairways have dead-ends, some end at cliffy drops while others lead to entrance or exit points. This labyrinth was built actually to confuse the enemy intruder.

Chota ImambaraChota Imambara
It was the last mausoleum built in Lucknow, in the year 1838 by Mohammed Ali Shah. This imposing monument is located in the Old City. Chandeliers from Belgium adorn the interiors of this mausoleum.
The extensive use of glass work in the building reflects Persian style of architecture. The walls are inscribed with Arabic scripts. It is also called the Palace of Lights as it is illuminated during the festivals.

Jama Masjid
This is one of the most important pilgrimage destinations in Lucknow. Located in the midst of the city, this mosque reflects a fine example of Hindu-Muslim architecture in India. Standing tall with 260 pillars, supporting 15 arched domes on different elevations,
Jama Masjid is an absolute stunning beauty. It is made of yellow sand-stone. It is a paradise for heritage travellers.

Kukrail Reserve Forest
It is an exciting place for adventure lovers. It is rich in flora and fauna and has a small oasis in its vicinity which serves as an amazing picnic spot of Lucknow. It was opened in 1978, as a government initiative to encourage the suitable growing conditions for new born crocodiles.
The forest reserve authorities collect baby crocodiles from the adjoining rivers of the town like Girwa, Ramganga, Chambal and Suheli and nurture them, till they are equipped enough to protect themselves.
