Srisailam: South India's historic temple town
Embroidered by River Krishna, Srisailam town is peacefully nestled on the Nallamala Hills in the territories of Andhra Pradesh. This mountain town has been summoned by several names, such as Srigiri, Siridhan, Sirigiri, Srinagam and Sriparvatha. Saivite pilgrims, for years, have revered Srisailam as their integral religious abode. In addition, the history of Srisailam is inextricably linked with that of Sathavahanas, the first rulers of South India. The Pulumavis Nasik inscription, dating back to the 1st century AD, mentions the existence of Srisailam for the first time.
The Sri Bhramaramba Mallikarjuna Temple, located in the Srisailam is considered very sacred. It preserves one of the 12 Jyotirlinga temples, dedicated to Lord Shiva. The aboriginal tribe, called the Chenchu people, were the first and foremost worshippers of Goddess Bhramarambha, who is acknowledged as a very ferocious deity. Though, the golden age of Srisailam was witnessed during the era of Reddy Kings. The practise of Veeracharam, in which devotees practised self-mutilation to absolve their sins, was once practised in Sri Bhramaramba Mallikarjuna Temple.
