Tawang

The Beautiful Land of Monpas

Tawang Arunachal Pradesh

Nestled close to the Indo-Bhutan Border, Tawang is known as the mesmerizing land of the Monpa Tribes. It is bordered by Bhutan in the southwest, Tibet in the north and the Sela Ranges in the east. Tawang is also renowned for its adventurous outdoor activities and is an incredible hill station located in the northwestern part of Arunachal Pradesh. Adventure enthusiasts, newlyweds and those seeking a peaceful, laid-back retreat in quaint surroundings often visit Tawang. Completely cut off from the noise and chaos of city life, it offers an experience that is both delightful and memorable.

Tawang is situated 10,000 ft above sea level. The historic Tawang Monastery, located in this region, has existed for over 400 years, making it an important centre for Buddhist learning. Historically, Tawang was once under the Kingdom of Tibet. The town derives its name from the monastery itself. Some believe that Mera Lama bestowed the name ‘Tawang’ in the 17th century. It is also believed that followers of the Tantric faith lived in this region before the advent of Mahayana Buddhism.

Following are the main attractions of Tawang

Tawang Monastery: This is the largest monastery in India. It is believed to have been built at the wishes of Mera Lama, who served under the 5th Dalai Lama, in the 17th century. Also known as Galden Namgyal Lhatse, the monastery took nearly forty years to complete. It suffered damage during the Chinese invasion of 1962, and reconstruction work continues even today.

The monastery is renowned for housing monks and for its impressive 8.3-metre-high statue of Lord Buddha. Valuable handwritten scriptures, sculptures and idols are preserved within its campus. The two prominent Monpa festivals—Torgya and Dungyur—are celebrated here with great enthusiasm.

Pankang Teng Tso Lake: One of the most beautiful lakes in Tawang, it lies 17 km from the main town. The peaceful ambience, chirping birds, fresh fragrance of the earth and sparkling water make this lake a visual delight. It is ideal to visit during summer, as the lake remains frozen in winter. Bright rhododendrons along the route add to its charm.

Bum La Pass: Located 37 km from Tawang and perched at 16,500 ft above sea level, Bum La Pass is known for its challenging route and thrilling journey. Despite the difficulty, the breathtaking scenery makes every moment worthwhile.

Nuranang Falls: Also known as Bong Bong Falls, this spectacular yet lesser-known waterfall lies on the road connecting Bomdila to Tawang. Its beauty remains untouched, making it a hidden gem for travellers.

The Tawang War Memorial: This memorial honours the sacrifice of 2,140 Indian soldiers who lost their lives during the Indo-China War of 1962. The names of the martyrs are engraved on the prayer wheels installed within the memorial. Maps, artifacts, bullets, helmets, utensils and various remnants from the war are preserved here.
