Gangtok
Gangtok, literally meaning hill top is a hilly town. It is well known as the land of monasteries. The town has people from different ethnicities. The presence of Buddhists, Chinese, Tibetans as well and Hindus gives Gangtok a colorful ambiance. Gangtok is full of Gompas, Stupas, parks and gardens. Some of the major attractions in and around Gangtok are the Rumtek, Tsomgo Lake, Hanuman Tok, Changu lake, Deer park and so on.
Nathula
Nathula Pass was a major corridor of passage between India and Tibet before it was closed in 1962. At an altitude of 14450 ft, it is one of the highest motorable roads in the world. The Nathula Pass is marked by Entrance gates of both countries (India and China) and military bunkers on both sides of the gates. The nearby attractions to Nathula Pass of Sikkim are the two prominent pilgrimage; Buddhists and to the Hindus. The Buddhist pilgrimage is Lhasa which is also known as Roof of the World while the Hindu pilgrimage is Mansarovar Lake or the place of Spiritual Freedom.
Yumthang Valley
Is a beautiful valley called the valley of flowers. Yumthang Valley is known for its Shingba Rhododendron Sanctuary. It has around 24 species of rhododendron (the state flower). One of the major tourist attractions of this place includes Chungthang, the Sikkim countryside. Apart from that, visitors can explore nearby places like Lachung and Kanchenjunga national park. Valley is mostly visited by people who are interested in trekking.
Monasteries
Sikkim's near about 200 monasteries reflect the cultural heritage and lifestyle of the people. Guru Padmasambhava is the presiding deity at all the monasteries. Red robed lamas chanting sacred mantras, drums and trumpets blowing in the background, prayer wheels whirring and white lights flickering are a sight to behold here. Some of the major monasteries are Rumtek, Phensang, Phodong, Enchay, Pemayangtse and so on.
