Omkareshwar: The 'Mini Varanasi' in Madhya Pradesh

Omkareshwar

The sacred temple town of Omkareshwar is located on an 'Om' shaped island near the Narmada River in Madhya Pradesh. It is often called 'Mini Varanasi' because of its serene ghats. Over the years, it has grown popular not only with pilgrims but also with backpackers. The island, also known as Mandhata, is surrounded by the Vindhya Range in the north and the Satpura Hills in the south. Omkareshwar preserves one of the 12 sacred Jyotirlingas of Lord Shiva and is known for its spiritual vibe.

According to legends, the Jyotirlinga at Omkareshwar is divided into two forms. The first is known as Omkareshwar, meaning the “Lord of Omkara,” while the second is called Amareshwar, meaning the “Lord of Immortal Gods.” Mythology narrates that Lord Shiva appeared before the demons here to protect the Gods.

Following are the main attractions of Omkareshwar:

Gauri Somnath Temple: This is one of the largest shrines in Omkareshwar. Its exquisite Bhumij-style architecture resembles a pea hen and features three distinct storeys. Dedicated to Lord Shiva, the temple houses a 6-feet-tall Shiva Lingam.

Omkareshwar Temple: This is one of the most important pilgrimage centres in India and is closely associated with the Mamaleshwar Temple. Several ancient religious ceremonies were performed here. The temple’s Nagara-style architecture makes it visually distinct. Omkareshwar
